Policies

Sun protection policy

We have developed this with the help of the parents involvement group to ensure that we can all enjoy the sun safely over the summer months.

The sun's rays are particularly strong over the summer and they can damage children's skin. This may not seem like a problem right now, but sadly it can lead to skin cancer in later life. Your child's health and well-being are very important to us, so we have decided to spend more time discussing sun-protection at nursery and increase the shade in our playground.

We are also going to be actively encouraging all children to wear a hat when they play outside. Please send your child to nursery wearing a labelled, comfortable, wide-brimmed hat or legionnaire style cap. We have bought some nursery hats to give to children who forget their own.

If your child is fair skinned it may be a good idea to provide additional protection by using high factor sunscreen. Staff at Bizzy Tots will be supervising children applying sunscreen and helping those that are not able to apply sunscreen by themselves. If you would like your child to be included please return the attached sunscreen permission form with a bottle of factor 15+ sunscreen clearly labelled with your child's name.

More details of these and other new sun protection plans can be found in our SunSmart Policy which can be found with our Policy and Procedures booklet in the hallway.

Your support is very important if our new policies are going to work. You can help by:

  • talking to your child about the importance of sun protection at home
  • remembering to send your child to nursery with a wide brimmed hat

Illness and medication

We have set out these guidelines to prevent other children from becoming ill and also to reduce staff sickness which, if we were unable to meet staff ratios, could lead to the closure of a room, and trust that parents will keep us informed as requested.

  • Sickness and Diarrhoea Should a child be sick at nursery they will be required to be collected immediately. Should a child have diarrhoea more than twice they will be required to go home. Depending on severity, a minimum of 24 hours away from nursery is required.
  • Conjunctivitis Any child showing symptoms of conjunctivitis will be required to be collected and checked by a doctor. A minimum of 12 hours worth of treatment is required, depending on severity, then treatment can be administered at nursery.
  • Calpol We will only give one dosage to a child during the day. If symptoms persist and there is no improvement 30 minutes after administering medication we will require the child to go home.
  • Any form of medication that is given to a child before arriving at nursery is to be reported to the member of staff who is caring for your child. This is to prevent overdose.
  • Antibiotics If children are on antibiotics they are to be absent from nursery for the first 24 hours. Thereafter we will administer the medication.
  • Medication that is not prescribed is not allowed to be administered as per Ofsted regulations.
  • Any bump, cut, bruise or injury that has happened at home should be reported to your child's key worker/carer.
  • Please can all parents inform nursery if your child is off with any illness. This is so we can inform other parents of symptoms to look out for.
  • Chicken Pox Children can return once all the spots have crusted over and are not blistering.
  • Contacts Any changes to contact numbers - even if only for a few hours - should be advised to the nursery.

Accident records

Health and Safety is implemented fully at the nursery with every effort made to ensure accidents do not occur. However, accident records are kept and details of every accident, however slight, are recorded. All the staff are NNEB or NVQ Early Years trained and have up to date first aid certificates. Every member of staff that is employed by Bizzy Tots is police checked and references are followed up. We have appraisals, ongoing training as well as 6-monthly room moves to keep the staff aware of all the areas and development of the children.

Child protection

The safety of the children in our care is the first and paramount consideration. Consequently a child protection procedure is in place covering any concerns over physical, emotional or other abuse. Copies of the procedure are available on request from the Bizzy Tots office.
